A recent study in Gut shows that people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are more likely to die from a Clostridium difficile infection than people who do not have IBD. Infection with the bacteria C difficile can occur after treatment with antibiotics or antimicrobials. People with ulcerative colitis have a higher rate of C difficile infection than people with Crohn's disease. Similarly, those with ulcerative colitis have worse outcomes than those with Crohn's disease. Overall, people with IBD have longer hospital stays and are more likely to die from C difficile infection than those who do not have IBD.
