Potential New Treatment for Crohn's and Colitis

Thursday January 17, 2008
Two studies done in Ireland and the US and published in the journal Gastroenterology outline a new treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The researchers claim that the symptoms of IBD are practically reversed by a new class of drugs called hydroxylase inhibitors.

The way this drug works on the digestive tract is by tricking it. The digestive tract thinks it's not getting enough oxygen and it starts to try to protect itself. That keeps the cells in the lining of the intestines from dying and causing IBD symptoms.

To me it sounds almost too good to be true. Can you imagine? A drug that stops IBD? For most of us who suffer with the disease every day, that certainly seems like an impossible dream. I'm sure more research will be done and we'll be hearing more about these drugs in the coming years.

We pray that this new drug will cure our son and thousands and thousands of others who are suffering from colitis. It is an unbearable pain to see how my son is suffering with colitis.

Dear Amber Tresca,

You wrote on 1/17/08 about a Gastroenterology article that reported on success with IBD through hydroxxylase inhibitors. I cannot find that article, and would appreciate the exact reference, as well as any other information you may have about this medication. Thank you.
