C Difficile Colitis Spreading, Becoming More Deadly

You may have heard that bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics and that you should not get antibiotics unless you truly need them. Antibiotics can also be responsible for an invasive and deadly bacteria, Clostridium difficile, that is a serious problem for hospitals and nursing homes. Antibiotics can kill off the helpful (as well as the harmful) bacteria in the colon, leaving a person open to infection. Infection with C difficile is becoming more prevalent, and it can be an especially difficult problem for people with inflammatory bowel disease.
