Healing IBD Wounds With Stem Cells?
Tuesday May 5, 2009
The University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom is beginning a two year study on the effect stem cell markers will have on the ulceration that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causes on the lining of the intestines. It's unknown what causes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and the course of these diseases is erratic. In some cases, the lining of the intestine heals, with the results being remission and a reduction in symptoms. The hope is that studying this marker, CD24, and its effect on the healing process will lead to the development of new medications for IBD. The research is being funded with a grant from the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (NACC).
