American Idol Contestant Announces He Has Ulcerative Colitis

By March 20, 2011

Follow me on:

Last week, there was some speculation that American Idol contestant Casey Abrams was battling ulcerative colitis. Abrams had missed the American Idol taping on March 10, and was hospitalized. He later took to his Twitter account to tell his fans that he was doing well, but had received some blood transfusions. On March 16, he once again used Twitter to announce that he does, in fact, have ulcerative colitis.

Casey Abrams Tweet

In the tweet, Abrams assures his fans that his symptoms are "under control" while acknowledging that ulcerative colitis is a lifelong condition.

How will this affect Abrams in the American Idol competition? There has been some speculation that he might receive a "sympathy" vote because of his illness and hospitalization. He is considered to be one of the frontrunners this season, with a strong chance at winning the entire competition.

As most of us know, ulcerative colitis is extremely unpredictable. Symptoms may be perfectly mild one day and become severe almost overnight. Sometimes there's a reason for it, and sometimes there's no telling why a flare-up occurs. A high-stress environment like a televised reality show could spell trouble for a disease like ulcerative colitis that's exacerbated by stress.

What do you think? Are you more likely to vote for Abrams knowing that he has ulcerative colitis? Click on "Comments" below and tell me about it.

No, I won’t be voting for him more because of this. Every year we get someone with a sad story, or illness, and there are those voting purely out of sympathy.

I liked Casey’s performances in the beginning, but he has steadily gone down hill. His Nirvana performance was nothing more than a scream fest.

This is a singing competition. If people want to express their sympathy for him, they need to send him a card.

Pam, seems like you may need to work on your capacity for empathy.

I think the song he performed lent itself to screaming lol. I love his voice and his offbeat personality. Its refreshing to see someone that not a cookie cut personality. I wish him well with his illness but I do hope he stays away from Nirvana. I am just not a fan of that style of music.

Having been hospitalized for UC several times, and having received blood transfusions myself, I think he should certainly be commended for fighting this uphill battle so well. And now, doing it publicly. If his performances have suffered, I don’t think it’s any surprise. I guess we’ll see if he truly does have things under control (and I hope he does!) or if there’s more health-related issues for him in the future.

I hope that they will not let this disease influence their decision. I know, cuz I have UC. I lost alot of time from work with this. Plus, I have IBS. I am so happy that he had the courage to tell the world about this disease. Maybe the rest of the world and the bosses will become educated on what this is.

@ Pam
I’m 14 and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis last year just like he said its chronic and you never have a stable time….one day your normal and the next you cant move without collapsing in pain. I wen through exactly what he did and frankly saying that theres always a sob story for votes hurts because my life was great and now I’m behind in everything because of a flare up and that stresses me out and makes it worse, I can garuntee you hes going through a lot right now and when people think hes saying this for no reason its going to stress him out and it will make everything worse for him both physically and mentally, please think of what hes going to before you say things.
