Can You Drink Coffee Before A Colonoscopy?

By June 24, 2013

Cup Of Coffee

All of us have our little addictions. I can't fall asleep without reading -- at least a few pages, sometimes several chapters. If I don't get my morning walk and a cup of tea afterwards, I can get pretty cranky. What can't you live without in the morning?

I'm willing to bet that many of you can't do without that morning cup of coffee. I have mixed feelings about coffee -- I don't drink it myself, but I do understand that is has a significant place in the morning ritual for many people. It does become more complicated for people who have IBD, however, because coffee can make you poop. It's not true of everyone, and not true all the time, but for people who have diarrhea, it might not be the best option for a morning pick-me-up.

The coffee ritual gets even more complicated on the morning of a colonoscopy. Some people find it almost impossible to get moving in the morning (meaning getting out of bed and out the door, not moving the bowels!) without coffee. Yet, the instructions for preparing for a colonoscopy may or may not have information about drinking coffee.

What are you supposed to do, the morning of your colonoscopy? Drink that coffee or not? I have the answer here.
