Earlier in the month I discussed the potential harms of unnecessary testing. A colonoscopy is an effective screening tool for colon cancer, one that can also actually prevent cancer. Polyps can be removed during a colonoscopy, which would prevent them from turning cancerous. Therefore, a colonoscopy is a screening test that can save lives. But even necessary and lifesaving tests can result in complications, and some people may delay a colonoscopy out of concerns over safety. If you know someone who has been avoiding a colonoscopy because of risks, there is information that may put their mind at ease.
