F.A.Q.
I found blood in my stool -- what is it and what should I do?
Please make an appointment to see your physician as soon as possible. While blood can be a symptom of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, it is never a symptom of IBS. In the meantime, see these links for more information:

  • My stool is the color green (or red, black, grey), should I be concerned?
Some changes in stool color are temporary and caused by medications, supplements, or foods. Think about any recent changes in your medication or diet that might indicate a change in your stool color. For more information see:
  • Is Green Stool Abnormal?
  • Causes of Red or Black Colored Stools
  • Unusual Stool Colors
  • Suddenly my stool is narrower (or softer, harder, more or less frequent) than it used to be. What could it be?
A change in color, size, consistency, or frequency of stool is know as a "change in bowel habits." A change in bowel habits can be caused by diet, stress, or a more serious condition. Changes in bowel habits should always be reported to your physician. For more information please see:

  • How can I get in contact with other people with IBS, IBD, etc.?
The best place to ask questions, share ideas or just talk about daily life with digestive disease is the forum. Drop in to ask your question, help answer someone elses, or even just to read posts from others.
