Q:
I am writing to ask how I can find a qualified specialist to treat my daughters Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Her pediatrician recommended we give her mineral oil. We do this about 4 days after a bowel movement which seems to help her go every 3 or 4 days. I just don't think giving mineral oil every day can be healthy. In any event, our pediatrician seems complacent about her treatment. I want to get a referral to a specialist. How would I research or find a REALLY qualified specialist?A:
Thank you for your question. Long-term use of any laxative is generally not recommended. Mineral oil or other laxatives are used to help children with constipation, but usually in conjunction with a change in diet and/or behavior.A good way to find a doctor is by asking friends, family and colleagues, but it may be difficult to find someone who knows a pediatric gastroenterologist. You can try calling the local hospital to see if they have a pediatric gastro on staff. Another quick call to the doctor's office can confirm qualifications, academic affiliations, or membership in respected medical associations.
