How much should I tell my friends/co-workers about my spouse's condition?

You should only divulge as much information as your spouse is comfortable with. Family members and friends will need to be aware of the situation when special eating and bathroom arrangements are required. As a general rule, only tell as much as your spouse wants you to.

This is a question that should be settled early in the relationship. Don't wait for an acquaintance or business colleague to ask before determining your answer.

What do I do if my spouse "has to go"?

That all depends on what you're doing at the time. You should know where every bathroom is within a five-mile radius at all times. When you go somewhere, try to find a map off of the Internet. When you enter a mall, ask where the local restrooms are first (not when your spouse needs them).

Be prepared to make "pit stops" for bathroom breaks during trips. When driving, this means you need to be flexible. When you're not the driver, this means you need to reemphasize that the driver needs to be flexible.

As in all cases, be sensitive to your spouse's needs, and having already mapped out your path to your destination, be prepared to be late.

How can we have a normal social life if my spouse never wants to leave the house?
  1. There is no such thing as a "normal" social life.
  2. With the advent of the Internet, a social life can cast a very wide net.
  3. Plan your social events in hourly breaks. If you intend to plan a long trip, keep restrooms nearby. Always be prepared to call it quits if your spouse isn't up to it.
