What is Colazal?
Colazal is used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and ulcerative proctitis. Colazal interacts with bacteria in the large intestine to release mesalamine. The mesalamine works topically to decrease the inflammation caused by ulcerative colitis. Colazal is normally taken in doses of one capsue three times per day with or without food. It is typically taken for 8 weeks, but may be used for as long as 12 weeks. Even though Colazal belongs to the 5-amino salicylates class of drugs, it may provide faster relief from ulcerative colitis symptoms than other medications in this category. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose should be taken soon, just take that dose. Don't double up, or take more than one dose at a time. Colazal has not been studied for use in children. Tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following conditions:
