The US Food and Drug Administration recommended the approval of Zelmac to treat abdominal pain and constipation in women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. IBS affects up to 20% of people in the Western population, and symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, and pain.

Zelmac was well tolerated in a clinical trial involving more than 2,000 patients. A common side effect was diarrhea, which was normally resolved without discontinuing treatment. Other side effects were comparable to the placebo.
