Bowel Obstruction

Definition: A partial or full blockage in either the small intestine or large intestine that inhibits stool from passing. An obstruction can have one of many causes, including a hernia, scar tissue, tumor growth, or a twist in the intestine. Obstructions are a common complication of Crohn’s disease.

Symptoms of a bowel obstruction include:

  • A feeling of fullness in the abdomen
  • Bloating (distention)
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Pain and cramping
  • Vomiting
