For some people, heading off to the gastroenterologist and getting a prescription (or several) may not be effective. If a person with IBS is sensitive or allergic or doesn't respond to medications, what choices are left? Fortunately, there are complementary, or alternative therapies that may help some IBS sufferers.

Peppermint, chamomile, flaxseed oil, and lactobacillus acidophillus are all herbs and supplements that have been found to help symptoms of IBS. Peppermint is widely prescribed in Europe for IBS. Cognitive behavior therapy has been studied and proven to be effective.
