Avoid Dairy Products

About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by Kate Grossman, MD
With all the attention focused on lactose intolerance in recent years, it's still not a popular idea to give up dairy. Does intolerance of milk products doom you to a life without ice cream, cold cereal, and cheese? NO!

What is it about dairy that causes so many problems for digestion? It's the lactose. There are many products on the market now which can eliminate or decrease the lactose in milk. Lactase (the enzyme necessary to break down lactose) can be taken in pill form. There are still other dairy products that one can buy without any lactose in them at all.

There are also alternatives to dairy products. Soy milk and cheeses are comparable substitutes, have no lactose, and are generally lower in fat.

With all these alternatives, you can have your cheese without an order of IBS on the side.
