What It Is:

Stool Logger is an application for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. This application helps people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and others, track their bowel movements over time.

How It Works:

Stool Logger is used to record information about your stools on a daily basis. Each bowel movement is rated using the Bristol Stool Scale (which is also sometimes called the Bristol Stool Chart). By classifying your stool into one of the seven types of stools found in the Bristol Stool Scale, you are recording whether that stool may have been soft and easily passed, more like constipation, or more like diarrhea.

When you have a bowel movement, you add a new entry to the log. You input the date and time, the Bristol Rating (the explanation is directly in the tool so you don't need to be familiar with it), if the evacuation was incomplete, or if there was seepage or any urgency. There is also a notation area for you to add any other comments you might have, or associated symptoms.

From the entries page you also have the option of emailing your log in a simple .txt format. This file could be printed, imported into a spreadsheet, or even emailed directly to your physician.

When you choose to analyze your stool entries, you view a bar graph that charts the Bristol Rating of each entry. This should quickly show you if most of your stools trend to a particular type on the scale.

Who Might Use It:

The creator, who has IBD, designed the program with people who have Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in mind. It might also be useful for people who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or those who are caregivers for children or adults.

How Much It Costs:

Stool Logger is $1.99.
