There currently is no research to determine the effectiveness of The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but many people with IBD have tried it. A common complaint about the diet is how restrictive it is. If you've tried the SCD, did you find it difficult to follow? What did you do about food during the holidays or when eating out at restaurants? Were your family and friend supportive of your diet plan? Share your experiences about how you managed your life while trying the SCD. Share Your Tips

Going Back To Basics

I've been following the SCD without knowing it, and yes it DOES help with symptoms. I've had gastro and extraintestinal problems for about 2 years, currently beginning tests to find out why. I started dietary changes to see if it helped, going lactose-free which cut but didn't stop the gas/bloating/pain, then went on a 10-step candida elimination diet which cuts out gluten & sugars, also the non-gluten grains if problems persist. The SCD is definitely worth a try at least as it just may help you feel better. Personally I can say that if I reintroduce the "forbidden" foods the whole gamut of my symptoms return until I cut them again. Good luck to all of you (all of us!).

My Specific Diet

I have recently tried the low carb bread sold online and did not have symptoms. I have also had 1/2 cup of low carb pasta once in the last two months without symptoms. So I am finding if I dont overdo it, maybe I can have special bread or pasta only occasionally. I accidently had a sugar product last week with some cramps following, so I'm just experimenting with this diet and finding out what my body will tolerate. I do have more energy and it beats taking pills that don't work. And perhaps most importantly I'm starting to feel EMPOWERED about my life again.

My Recovery

For the last three years I have lived with debilitating stomach pain, severe lower intestine pain, diarrhea, vomiting and fatigue. The attacks were unpredictable and brought down the quality of my life. I have seen several specialists who conclude they can't help me and I probably have IBS. Many drugs later I still suffered. I started a low carb diet three weeks ago to lose weight and have discovered I no longer have symptoms. If I only had this information three years ago.

SCD Diet

My child has food allergies, so I am already used to preparing foods to take on holiday or to restaurants. These days, almost everyone is on some kind of diet or allergic to some food. For me, this SCD diet is much healthier than the standard American diet. I have been on it 3 months (for Crohn's) with the help of my mother, father, aunt and uncle. Once you read the book -- or at least the "ok" foods -- it's not that hard. The hard part is trying to start anything new -- especially when you are sick. My advice? Make the chicken soup recipe (or have a friend do it) in bulk along with juice (home made is healthier), yogurt, eggs and slowly try the intro diet while regaining strength and reading through the rest of the book. It's worth a try at least for a few months to know if it may help you. At least think of it this way. You won't know unless you try AND it's a very healthy diet for the rest of your body. Remember -- you are more than just a large intestine. :)
