Definition: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is an autoimmune disease of the liver characterized by the inflammation and narrowing of the bile ducts both inside and outside of the liver. PSC progresses slowly, but it can be a life-threatening condition. Treatment for PSC focuses on alleviating the symptoms, such as itching; performing procedures to open any blocked bile ducts; and slowing the progression of the disease.
PSC is often associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially ulcerative colitis, but also Crohn's disease. It's unclear why PSC and IBD are related, but it is thought to be because both are autoimmune conditions.
